John Montgomery with two of his brothers moved from Scotland to Ireland. He settled in the County of Meath, where he built the flour mills of Naas. He married one of the daughters of Thomas Bell (name unknown). They had at least four sons and three daughters. John occupy the office of High Sheriff of Naas for many years and retired to Dublin.

 John and Mary Montgomery (c. 1763 - ³ 1815)
John Montgomery was born about 1763 at Oldtown Naas, Co. Kildare. He married Mary Park, widow of Stenegan. She was born in 1762. They had two children. John died in 1815/1816 in Dublin. In 1832 John Jnr. brought his family in Ireland, i.e. his mother and siblings with their families, to South Africa to unite the family again. Mary was determined to lead an independent life, and earned her livelihood by producing feather cushions and collecting the wool caught on bushes on the farm, which she sold at one of John's stores. She died in 1854 at the age of 92 in Burgersdorp.

 Willem van Zyl (1666 - 1727)

Willem van Zyl is gebore c. 1666 in Delft, Nederland. Hy trou in 1694 in Oude Kerk, Amsterdam met Christina van Lo(o)veren, gedoop in 1673 in Amsterdam. Willem en Christina seil aan boord "De Drie Croonen" van Texel, Nederland en kom in 1699 in die Kaap aan. Hy was 'n tuinier en boer op "Vrede en Lust", Simondium, distrik Franschhoek. Willem is in 1727 oorlede en Christina gedurende of na 1718. Hulle het nege kinders gehad.

 Pieter van Zyl (1706 - 1782)

Pieter van Zyl is gedoop in 1706 in Drakenstein. Hy trou in 1734 met Hester van Wyk, gebore in 1712. Hulle het twaalf kinders gehad. Pieter was 'n burger van Drakenstein. Hy boer op die plaas "Vredendal" wat in 1748 aan hom toegeken is en ook op 'n plaas aan die Olifantsrivier. Pieter sterf in 1782 te "Vredendal" en Hester sit die boerdery met behulp van hul seuns voort na sy dood. Sy is gedurende of na 1783 oorlede.

 Adriaan van Zyl (1735 - >1788)

Adriaan van Zyl is gedoop in 1735 in Drakenstein. Hy trou in 1763 met Sara Johanna Wiese, gebore in 1743. Sy was die dogter van Benjamin Wiese en Hester Mostert. Hulle het dertien kinders gehad. Adriaan is gedurende of na 1787 oorlede en Sara gedurende of na 1888.

 Johannes Benjamin van Zyl (1780 - > 1835)

Jan van Zyl is gebore in 1780. Jan was 'n burger van Stellenbosch, en boer later te "Grootfontein", Distrik Cradock. Hy trou in 1804 met Sara van Schalkwyk, gebore in 1786. Hulle het tien kinders gehad. Sara sterf in 1822 (of 1821). Jan trou in 1822 (of 1821) met Aletta Vorster, gebore in 1808; hulle het agt kinders gehad. Sy ontval hom in Augustus 1833. In Desember 1833 trou hy met Catharina Oberholster, gebore in 1812. Jan is oorlede in 1835 na 'n huwelik van net 1 jaar en 9 maande. Hulle het twee kinders gehad; die jongste is gebore na sy dood. Hy het altesaam 20 kinders gehad.

 John and Sannah Montgomery (born Van Zyl).

John Montgomery was born in 1803 in Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 16 he emigrated to the Cape with the 1820 Settlers party of Captain Thomas Butler. In 1822 he married Susannah van Zyl in Cradock. She was born in 1805. They had 14 children and their marriage lasted 46 years, until Sannah's death in 1868. John was a man of many parts: sailor, tinker, blacksmith, jeweller, shoemaker, trader, farmer, hunter, explorer and also a journalist. In 1846 he founded Burgersdorp. He owned many farms in the Eastern Cape and the two Boer Republics, as well as properties in various towns. He died in 1878.
